Objective: This study aims to identify the key factors associated with tooth extraction and the primary reasons for extraction among a sample population.
Study Design: Cross-sectional study
Place and Duration of Study: Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, Bacha Khan College of Dentistry, Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan; from January 2023 to June 2023.
Materials and Methods: A total of 522 participants were analyzed based on their extraction status. Predictor variables included age, gender, socioeconomic status, parental education, dental visits, and history of dental pain. Statistical significance was determined using p-values.
Results: Of the 522 people who took part, 36.4% had a tooth pulled. People who were significantly more likely to have their teeth extracted had the following characteristics: being at least 17 years old, having a low socioeconomic status, having parents with low levels of education, not having gone to the dentist in the past year, and a history of dental pain. There was no significant association between gender and it (p=0.47). Major tooth decay (50%), periodontal disease (15.8%), orthodontic issues (14.7%), trauma (11.6%), and other reasons (7.3%) were the most common reasons for extraction. These results stress the importance of preventative dentistry care and the relevance of behavioral and socioeconomic variables.
Conclusion: The findings emphasize the role of socioeconomic disparities and access to dental care in tooth extraction prevalence. Preventive measures, including improved oral health education and accessibility to dental services, are essential to reducing extraction rates.
