Objective: This study aims to examine the demographic traits, clinical manifestations, anatomical distribution, and recurrence patterns of odontogenic cysts in patients referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Study Design: Cross-sectional study
Place and Duration of Study: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, CIMS Dental College, Multan, Pakistan, from July 2022 to December 2022.
Materials & Methods: A retrospective investigation was performed on 100 patients identified with odontogenic cysts. Data regarding age, gender, cyst type, anatomical location, clinical symptoms, smoking history, and recurrence rates were gathered and examined.
Results: The age group most impacted was 31-50 years (45%), exhibiting a male predominance (55%). Radicular cysts constituted 40%, followed by dentigerous cysts at 30%, odontogenic keratocysts at 20%, and lateral periodontal cysts at 10%. The mandible was impacted more commonly than the maxilla, with a prevalence of 60%. Clinically, pain (40%) and edema (35%) were the predominant manifestations, whereas 25% were asymptomatic. Almost 40% of patients were smokers, and recurrence occurred in 15 percent of cases, with odontogenic keratocysts exhibiting the greatest recurrence rate at 25%.
Conclusion: Odontogenic cysts have unique demographic, clinical, and structural characteristics, with radicular cysts being the most common and odontogenic keratocysts presenting the greatest recurrence risk. Pain and edema are the principal symptoms; however, a significant percentage of individuals remain asymptomatic, highlighting the necessity for early diagnosis and consistent monitoring.
